After trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada broke down last week, Trump’s 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of imports from Canada—including “everything from hockey sticks to some building materials, liquors and certain kinds of clothing”—went into effect Saturday morning. This led Prime Minister Mark Carney to threaten “dollar for dollar” retaliation, saying “You’re at war when you get attacked. We got attacked.” Trump responded by taking to Truth Social on Monday to accuse Canada of “ripping off the United States of America for years” and announced, “On January First, 2027, Tariffs on all Cars, Trucks, both large and small, Automotive Parts, and Steel, will be increased to 50%.” Then on Tuesday morning, Trump declared “The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer.”
That same day, Canada announced that beginning September 8, it would impose “tariffs of up to 50% on about 700 products worth about $20 billion in retaliation for Trump’s tariffs on Canada. Those products include U.S. steel, aluminum, chain saws, appliances, processed cheese, and clams.” As The Wall St. Journal notes, “The Canadian tariffs were designed to protect domestic companies hit by a fresh set of hefty U.S. tariffs and to sting President Trump and his Republican Party as they head into a difficult midterm election in November.” These include tariffs on seafood from Maine, cheese from Wisconsin, and GE appliances from Kentucky. On Thursday, Trump followed through on his “Lake America” threat by issuing an executive order, which read, “In recognition of this flourishing economic resource and its critical importance to our Nation’s economy and its people, I am directing that [Lake Ontario] officially be renamed as Lake America.” To put a fine point on it, Trump also took a Sharpie to a map of Lake Ontario, writing in his new name, “Lake America.”

On Monday, The Supreme Court issued a 6-3 emergency docket order lifting an injunction placed by a Massachusetts judge after Democratic officials in 23 states and the District of Columbia sued to block Donald Trump’s March EO restricting mail-in voting. Per The Guardian, back in March, Trump “ordered the government to create a ‘state citizenship list’ of eligible voters, requiring that mail-in ballots only be delivered to people on that list.”
