Why It Matters: Trump gutted the agency responsible for protecting U.S. infrastructure and elections, then went to war with a country capable of attacking both. Now American water systems are being targeted while election officials are being left without critical federal intel months before the midterms.

What Happened: A Trump-appointed federal banking regulator conditionally approved a national bank charter for World Liberty Trust, part of the Trump family’s crypto business. The unprecedented decision allows the company, which is 38% owned by a Trump-affiliated entity, to directly issue its own dollar-backed stablecoin and profit from transactions while Trump remains president.
Why It Matters: Trump’s government is granting regulatory approval to a business his family owns. He is yet again using the presidency to benefit his businesses via decisions made by the loyalists he installed in key agencies.

Inside Trump’s Failed Hunt for Noncitizen Voters
What Happened: Trump deployed Homeland Security Investigations agents nationwide to search voter rolls for noncitizens despite internal warnings that the effort would produce large numbers of false matches and could violate federal privacy laws. From January 2025 through May 2026, fewer than 150 cases were referred for prosecution and only 41 people were charged with election-related crimes out of more than 150 million voters.
Why It Matters: Trump sent federal agents to look for evidence to prove his election lies. They searched more than 150 million voters and found virtually nothing. His agencies did gain sweeping access to voter data as Trump tries to seize control over elections.

Justice Department expands military’s power to detain migrants accused of trespassing
What Happened: The Justice Department issued a legal opinion expanding the military’s authority to arrest migrants outside newly designated military zones along the southern border. The zones have already allowed troops to detain migrants for trespassing despite the Posse Comitatus Act’s longstanding restrictions on using the military for domestic law enforcement.
Why It Matters: Trump continues to erase the line between the military and civilian law enforcement. His regime created military zones to give troops arrest powers and is now expanding where those powers can be used.

What Happened: Federal prosecutors investigated Democratic fundraising firm Authentic Campaigns, formerly co-owned by the daughter of Judge Juan Merchan, who presided over Trump’s criminal trial. The investigation followed a referral from House Republicans who initially sought communications involving Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, Hakeem Jeffries, Adam Schiff, the DNC, and other prominent Democrats.
Why It Matters: Trump’s DOJ used a criminal investigation to seek communications involving his political opponents and the family of the judge who oversaw his felony conviction. Trump promised retribution, and his Justice Department continues to deliver.

What Happened: The Justice Department is shifting federal resources toward small-scale fraud cases. Meanwhile, Trump has pardoned or commuted the sentences of white-collar fraudsters, as the DOJ drops cases against corporations and wealthy executives.
Why It Matters: Trump’s DOJ is prosecuting ordinary people for small fraud while Trump pardons wealthy fraudsters and his government drops cases against corporations and executives. This is another example of two systems of justice: one for the wealthy and powerful, and another one for everyone else.

What Happened: FTC struck agreements with auto dealers accused of charging Black and Latino customers more. The FTC promised not to enforce parts of federal court orders requiring them to prevent credit discrimination and maintain fair-lending programs. They also made these deals without seeking court approval and, in at least one case, without notifying a state attorney general that had jointly brought the case.

What Happened: The Pentagon is introducing a new Western civilization course for students in military-run schools that links Western history with Christianity. The curriculum uses materials from a conservative publisher and Hillsdale College and portrays Islam as more violent than Christianity. The Pentagon is also installing education officials tasked with expanding “patriotic values and classical learning.”
Why It Matters: The Pentagon is bringing religion into government-run schools and deciding what version of American history children should be taught. And the “patriotic values and classical learning” sounds disturbingly familiar to Russia’s “patriotic education,” where the regime uses schools to indoctrinate children and teach them the version of history the state wants them to believe.

US immigration judges are deporting people in mass hearings – some without notice
What Happened: Immigration courts are scheduling large numbers of migrants for hearings on short notice, sometimes moving cases forward by months or even a year. Those who fail to appear can be ordered deported in absentia. Advocates warn that some people do not receive adequate notice and may not know they have removal orders.

ICE uses controversial program to boost deportations. Here’s how it works in 1 county
What Happened: Trump has dramatically expanded ICE’s 287(g) program, deputizing state and local police to interrogate and arrest people for immigration violations. Training for participating officers has been cut from about a month in person to just 40 hours online, while the program has faced lawsuits and complaints over racial profiling and wrongful detention.

What Happened: A federal judge refused to block Trump from moving forward with plans to build 62 miles of border wall across the Tohono O’odham Nation’s reservation in Arizona without the tribe’s consent.
