Trump escalating his attacks on elections and political opponents, expanding his immigration crackdown, and funding Russia are among this weekend’s top stories.
Russia floods social media with fake videos targeting U.S. midterm elections.
Trump moves to bypass new sanctions against Russia.
White House ordered restrictions on Ukraine’s Starshield satellite service.
What Happened: Russia’s Matryoshka network is spreading fake news videos, AI-generated celebrity clips, and disinformation about Democratic candidates on X, using bots to boost their views. Researchers identified 130 fabricated posts between September 10 and October 9 targeting candidates in 29 of 36 governor’s races and 20 of 35 Senate races.
Why It Matters: As Trump eases sanctions on Russia and undermines Ukraine’s ability to defend itself, Moscow is ramping up its attack on U.S. elections to help Republicans, using fake videos and bot networks to spread lies about Dem candidates and influence voters.

What Happened: Leaked records show $333 million in donations for Trump’s White House ballroom, including $25 million each from Apple, Nvidia, and several billionaires. At least $77 million came from donors who wanted to remain anonymous, and nearly half the money came from companies or executives with federal contracts. Trump is predictably not listed despite claiming he donated.
Why It Matters: Corporations and billionaires with business before Trump’s government are giving millions to his ballroom project, including $77 million from anonymous donors. Trump continues selling access to himself as Americans are left in the dark about who is funding him.

What Happened: At least six current and former Trump political operatives, including Chris LaCivita and James Blair, traveled to Republika Srpska to help its pro-Russian government around local elections. Katie Wiles, daughter of White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, also traveled there with a Texas businessman connected to Donald Trump Jr. to discuss a gas pipeline project.
Why It Matters: Trump’s cronies are running political campaigns to help Kremlin proxies stay in power in the Balkans while pursuing business deals for themselves. Yet another example of mass corruption by Trump and his cronies.

What Happened: Trump threatened California election officials with lengthy prison sentences for counting mail-in ballots from more than 20,000 voters his Justice Department claims are likely noncitizens. California officials questioned the accuracy of the federal voter list and refused to exclude the ballots.
Why It Matters: Threatening to jail election officials who refuse to throw out ballots without proof is how authoritarians intimidate those responsible for running elections and pressure them to obey demands by the regime.

What Happened: Trump and federal officials continue lying about election fraud, foreign interference, and voting machine security. Election officials fear he is preparing to challenge results he dislikes, potentially by seizing voting equipment or disputing the election’s legitimacy.

What Happened: Trump is claiming executive privilege to keep his conversations about the Kennedy Center’s planned closure and renovation secret, including discussions with advisers who do not work for the federal government. The DOJ made the claim in response to a lawsuit by Rep. Joyce Beatty seeking records about the project and whether Trump intends to demolish the building.

What Happened: A White House election fraud task force led by Trump ally John Solomon has produced no evidence of election fraud and instead released records from investigations into Trump, including Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation and Jack Smith’s classified documents case. Trump allies are using the records to support a Justice Department investigation seeking criminal charges against officials who previously investigated him.
Why It Matters: Trump is turning a federal election fraud task force into another weapon against his political enemies, using all government resources to pursue the officials who investigated him or Russia.

What Happened: The Justice Department moved to disqualify federal Judge Ana Reyes after she ordered senior Interior Department officials to testify about the removal of hundreds of trees from Washington’s East Potomac Golf Links. The work took place despite her earlier instructions against surprise construction, and Trump’s DOJ accused her of bias after she demanded answers.

What Happened: Trump’s Justice Department has sued 30 states and D.C., demanding unredacted voter rolls containing millions of Americans’ personal information. Federal judges have dismissed all 26 cases decided so far, including Trump-appointed judges, finding that the DOJ lacked legal authority or sufficient factual grounds to obtain the records.
Why It Matters: Trump officials are trying to seize sensitive voter information and expand federal power over elections despite repeated court rulings against him. Judges have warned that the records could be used for voter suppression and immigration enforcement.

What Happened: Police departments in and around Chicago helped Homeland Security Investigations agents track anti-ICE activists in Minnesota, despite Illinois laws restricting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. The surveillance targeted people participating in constitutionally protected protests.
Why It Matters: Federal immigration agents are using local police to monitor people protesting government policies, turning law enforcement resources toward surveillance of political dissent.

What Happened: New court filings describe physical abuse by guards, inadequate medical care, disease outbreaks, filthy conditions, and food shortages at Camp East Montana, the nation’s largest ICE detention facility at Fort Bliss in Texas. Medical and correctional experts warn that conditions have contributed to preventable deaths and continue to endanger detainees, most of whom have no criminal records.

What Happened: ICE agents struck 48-year-old Miguel Parra Hernandez with an SUV as he fled on foot in Houston, shattering his leg, hip, and ankle. Agents claimed they were pursuing a wanted Mexican immigrant, but the suspect’s daughter produced a death certificate showing that the man in DHS’s wanted bulletin had died in 2017.

What Happened: The board overseeing the NIH Clinical Center unanimously criticized RFK Jr. for politicizing scientific research following the launch of a new Vaccine Injury Center. Board Chairman Jack Leslie warned that Kennedy appeared to have prejudged the clinic’s findings, threatening the hospital’s scientific independence.
Why It Matters: Kennedy is pushing his conspiracies into federal medical research, putting his extremist beliefs ahead of science and undermining the credibility of the findings.

What Happened: The CDC reported 4,410 measles cases nationwide, up 330 in one week, with 451 hospitalizations. Pennsylvania has recorded 1,260 cases and five deaths, while New York declared a disaster emergency earlier this month. Children and teenagers ages 5–19 account for 42% of cases.

What Happened: Attacks on commercial ships in and around the Strait of Hormuz have reached record levels as Iran intensifies its strikes. The attacks have reduced oil shipments, disrupted energy markets, and complicated Trump’s efforts to bring down gasoline prices before the midterms.
Why It Matters: Trump has no exit strategy to end his war with Iran as their attacks disrupt global oil supplies and drive up fuel prices in the U.S. and around the world.
What Happened: Iran says it has repaired much of its damaged air defense system and acquired additional equipment ahead of possible renewed U.S. attacks. Iranian officials threatened American warships enforcing the naval blockade, while Trump refused to rule out using the largest conventional bomb in the U.S. arsenal against Iran after the midterms.

What Happened: Trump signed an executive order waiving nearly all sanctions under Lindsey Graham’s sanctions bill, which he signed into law just last month. The order came two days before the sanctions were scheduled to take effect and one week after Trump lifted restrictions on Russian diesel.
Why It Matters: Trump is helping Russia fund its genocidal war by lifting sanctions, allowing Russia to sell diesel, and removing all economic pressure. Meanwhile Russian forces continue to escalate their deadly attacks, targeting Ukrainian civilians.
Source: Politico
What Happened: The order to restrict Ukraine’s military Starshield satellite service reportedly came from the White House and was passed to the Pentagon. The restrictions disrupted Ukrainian drone strikes against Russian forces and efforts to intercept Russian attack drones.
Why It Matters: Trump has put the U.S. on Russia’s side, sabotaging Ukraine’s ability to defend itself while protecting Russian oil infrastructure and trying to give Russia an advantage on the battlefield.

What Happened: Ukraine is running out of Patriot interceptor missiles, leaving civilians exposed to deadly Russian ballistic missile attacks. Trump has also threatened to cut intelligence sharing, as Ukrainians report they are no longer receiving advance warnings of Russian missile attacks on Kyiv, leaving Ukrainians with seconds to get to a bomb shelter.
Source: The Washington Post
What Happened: German Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil criticized Trump for trying to bring Russia back into international diplomacy while Moscow continues its war against Ukraine. His remarks come after Trump eased sanctions on Russia, demanded that Ukraine stop striking Russian oil refineries, and called for Zelenskyy to step aside.

What Happened: U.S. toy prices rose 6.6% over the past year, including a 4.2% jump in September, as Trump’s tariffs on Chinese imports and higher oil and shipping costs hit retailers ahead of the holiday season. A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that just 21% of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the cost of living.

What Happened: Thousands of No Kings events took place across the country, bringing together protestors, voters, and grassroots organizers ahead of midterms. The coalition, which includes the ACLU, Indivisible, and Black Voters Matter, shifted its focus from mass protests against Trump to early voting, voter education, and election protection.
